  • pinch sugar
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • ½ cup honey
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 3 eggs (divided)
  • 5 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1 tsp salt
  • For Honey Orange Butter: 2 sticks softened butter
  • 3 tbsp honey
  • zest of 1 orange

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast; let sit until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together warm milk, honey, melted butter, and two eggs.
  3. Add the yeast mixture to the milk mixture and gradually stir in flour, cardamom, and salt until a dough forms.
  4. Knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Let rise in a greased bowl covered until doubled (about an hour).
  6. Shape into loaves and let rise again on a lined baking sheet for another 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C), brush loaves with remaining egg, and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  8. For honey orange butter, mix softened butter with honey and orange zest until smooth.
